Final Blog

As a Hixson scholar I have already grown in academics. My mentors in recitation have given our class several tips to being successful in college.  Also having one free tutor a semester is a great opportunity to raise your grade in a class.

Learning how to manage play with school has been a large struggle this semester and I feel that through discussion in our classes I have the methods to help manage my time.  I have also learned how to work together and manage time to make a movie and blog although I do not like blogging I now know how to.

Diversity Event

Diversity Event

For my diversity event I was able to listen to Iowa’s Governor of Agriculture Chuck Grassley talk about the struggles in third world countries.  It was interesting hearing how he is helping in struggling countries.  Also discussed was the fact that Americas portion sizes are clearly too large.  I remember from high school that a great amount of food was thrown away.  Being that I have a past with world hunger it was hard for me to see this so I personally would not take more food than I could eat and I would eat everything on my plate every meal. One of Chuck Grassley’s proposals was to limit portion size in America and use the extra food to feed starving people in third world countries.

What the Hixson Award means to me

Receiving the Hixson award has relieved a lot of pressure off both my parents and my life.  I have also learned so much from previous Hixson scholars, the information that I have retained will help me greatly in the future.  With this award I was able to receive a tutor for my math class with no charge and I am offered a quite place to study and do homework away from all of the distractions that college can offer.  It has been a tough transition to college but I have learned how to study and manage my time a lot better all thanks to the Hixson program at Iowa State University. I would like to thank Christina one more time as I would not have this opportunity without her.
